Citi's office tower earns 'green' certification

Citi has announced that it has reached a significant milestone in its "green" building program by earning a Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the first time. The designation from the U.S. Green Building Council was awarded in a ceremony at Citi's newly constructed, 15-story skyscraper at Two Court Square, Queens, New York. Toyota's Prius ranks first in EPA's 2008 Fuel Economy Guide

Toyota's 2008 Prius hybrid car is the most fuel-efficient car in the United States for the second year in a row. Following the Prius in second and third places are Honda's Civic Hybrid and Nissan's Altima Hybrid. Those are the results of the annual Fuel Economy Guide, which is released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy, in order to help consumers make better-informed decisions when shopping for new cars. Study finds greener companies outperform rivals

A major new study by investment firm Innovest has found that companies with comprehensive climate change strategies have financially outperformed their competitors over the last three years. The Carbon Beta and Equity Performance study of 1,500 companies found that there is a "strong, positive, and growing correlation between industrial companies; sustainability in general, and climate change in particular, and their competitiveness and financial performance". Coca-Cola Enterprises wins Golden Peacock Award for CSR reporting

Coca-Cola Enterprises has been recognized as a recipient of the 2007 Golden Peacock Award for Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting by the World Council for Corporate Governance and the Centre for Sustainability and Excellence. "The 2006 Coca-Cola Enterprises Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report, Continuing Our Journey, was selected for excellent report structure, guidelines, content and communication," said Klaus Bohnke, director general, Golden Peacock Award Secretariat. BT plans wind farms that could generate 25% of its electricity requirements

BT has unveiled plans to develop wind farms aimed at generating up to 25 per cent of its existing UK electricity requirements by 2016.  The wind farm scheme represents the UK's biggest corporate wind power project outside of the energy sector. The project, costing up to £250m, will bring together third party funding and renewable energy partners. BT is one of Britain’s biggest consumers of electricity, with an annual requirement of around 0.7 per cent of the UK’s entire consumption.  BT’s wind farms could generate a total of 250MW of electricity – enough to meet the power needs of 122,000 homes… Read more

Brazil, west Africa agree to lobby for bio-fuels

Brazil and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) have agreed to push for the development and use of biofuels, the regional bloc said on Wednesday after a visit to Burkina Faso by President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva. Brazil, the world's leading ethanol supplier and the eight-nation bloc agreed to work towards the generation of biofuels in the region, said a statement from UEMOA. Private sector to join World Bank on aid

Private sector companies will for the first time join governments in contributing to the International Development Association, the World Bank’s main fund for poor countries, the bank’s president, Robert Zoellick, has told the Financial Times. Mr Zoellick said a “couple of private sector companies” had offered to pledge funds to help replenish the IDA. The agreement is subject to approval by the bank’s board. China sponsors quality-control training in its toy industry

China has sponsored quality-control training for more than 1,000 people in the country's toy industry in an effort to ensure the safety of exports, state media said Sunday. Government officials and executives from transnational companies gave lectures on Chinese, American, and European certification and testing standards and regulations, Xinhua press agency said. Survey finds 'green gap' between company communications and consumer understanding

A green gap exists around terms such as energy efficiency, energy conservation and clean energy, and customers’ understanding, acceptance and perceptions of value around those terms, according to a survey of 1,000 Americans by EcoAlign, a new strategic marketing agency launched by the Distributed Energy Financial Group. The results show that most consumers can't articulate the difference between the phrases “energy conservation” and “energy efficiency”… Read more
