Three-quarters of top-tier MBA students say corporate reputation will play a critical role in deciding where to work
A study of MBA students at top European, US and Asian schools confirms the importance of corporate reputation in the global war for talent. In the eighth annual Corporate Reputation Watch study by Hill & Knowlton, almost three quarters (73 per cent) of MBA students stated that corporate reputation plays an extremely or very important role when considering where to work after completing their MBA, with one fifth (20 per cent) saying it is fairly important.European students appear to place less importance on social responsibility when assessing a company’s reputation, with 38 per cent versus citing it as extremely or very important compared to 49 per cent in the overall sample… Read more

Alcatel-Lucent signs the UN Global Compact “Caring for Climate” initiative
Alcatel-Lucent has announced that Patricia Russo, the company’s CEO has signed the United Nations Global Compact "Caring for Climate" initiative, further strengthening the company's commitment to increase energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of its activities. "Caring for Climate" is a voluntary and complementary action platform for those UN Global Compact participants who seek to demonstrate leadership on the climate issue. UK investors team up for reports on financial consequences of climate change
Four of the UK’s biggest institutional investors, managing over £200bn in assets, are joining forces to produce a series of reports exploring the financial consequences of what they termed “unavoidable” climate change, Responsible Investor reports. The reports will look at the potential risks and opportunities in the industry sectors of electric utilities, oil and gas, real estate and water utilities. They will also suggest how investors can use the climate change findings to influence the behaviour of companies in investor meetings… Read more

EU emission limits could drive industries out of Europe
New EU limits on greenhouse gas emissions from heavy industries could prompt some of these to relocate lock, stock and barrel overseas, the Guardian reports. Draft legislative proposals by the European Commission, due to be published on January 23, would cut the emissions of some 11,000 plants by 21% on 2005 levels as part of the effort to reduce EU greenhouse gas output by at least 20% by 2020. IBM, Nokia, Pitney-Bowes and Sony release 'eco-patents' into public domain
IBM, Nokia, Pitney-Bowes and Sony are releasing 31 patents into the public domain, bringing together a collection of patents that can be used to address environmental problems. Spearheaded by IBM, the Eco-Patent Commons initiative hopes to spur innovation and create new business opportunities. IBM holds 27 of the first 31 patents released to the commons, Pitney-Bowes holds two, and Nokia and Sony each hold one. Among the topics addressed by these patents are ways to recycle cell phone components into new electronic devices, a method for replacing liquid solvents with ozone gas as a surface cleaner, and an environmentally friendly shock-absorbing packaging insert made of corrugated cardboard… Read more

Commuters body heat to power Stockholm office
Passengers travelling through Stockholm's central station could soon be playing a crucial part in an innovative energy saving system that will see their body heat captured and used to heat a local office block, BusinessGreen reports. The new system developed by the real estate firm Jernhusen will use the heat produced by the 250,000 daily passers-by to heat water that will then be pumped into the office's heating systems. Jernhusen will begin work on the system this spring, and the new building is expected to be completed by 2010… Read more

Boardroom quotas push Norwegian women beyond the glass ceiling
From 1 January 2008 it became compulsory for Norwegian companies to appoint a substantial number of women to their management boards. Norway now has close to 38 percent of women on the board of publicly listed companies, whereas the European average is around 8 percent. Business ethics matter to consumers, study says
Consumers use corporate social responsibility in evaluating their willingness to pay for a product, according to a study by the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. Ceres ranks banks on climate change strategies
While encouraging progress is being made, the banking sector still has a long way to go in confronting the business challenges posed by global climate change, according to a report issued today by the investor coalition Ceres. The report analyzed climate change governance practices of 40 of the world’s largest banks.The report found that a growing number of European, U.S. banks and Japanese banks are responding to the risks and opportunities presented by climate change, primarily by setting internal greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets, boosting climate-related equity research and elevating lending and financing for clean energy projects… Read more

World moving towards a more sustainable global economy: Worldwatch report
Global warming is forcing the world to change the way it does business, according to the annual State of the World 2008 report from the Worldwatch Institute, an independent research organisation. A more sustainable global economy is emerging as countries and companies move to combat the challenges posed by climate change.
