Coca-Cola showcase building recognised for environmental sustainability

Coca-ColaThe Coca-Cola Company has announced that the new World of Coca-Cola® achieved official "green" status as an environmentally friendly building. The attraction, which opened in downtown Atlanta in May 2007 as a venue to showcase the complete story of the Company and its brands, was awarded a "Gold" rating by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Environmentalists and other campaigners fear that sustainability and corporate social responsibility issues are falling off the boardroom agenda as businesses tighten their belts in the face of turbulent stockmarkets, the credit crunch and a looming economic slowdown, the Guardian reports. They worry that CSR could be seen by business as a fad whose time has come and gone. Australia latest to prepare plastic bag ban

The global movement against single-use plastic bags gathered further momentum yesterday after the South Australian state government said it would ban bags from next year, BusinessGreen reports. Federal environment minister Peter Garrett said that a ban in South Australia alone would result in 400 million fewer plastic bags entering the waste stream each year. He also urged other states to follow suit in introducing legislation. Financing woes plague EU climate technologies

Discussions between EU policymakers and energy sector stakeholders reveal sharp differences about how, and by whom, expensive CO2 capture and other 'green' technologies should be financed, EurActiv reports. Nestlé presents first 'Creating Shared Value' report on environmental and social impact

Nestlé has presented its first Creating Shared Value report, including new figures on the company's impact of its business activities on the environment and society across the world. In 2007, Nestlé reduced its direct greenhouse gas emissions by 16% compared to ten years ago, and its overall water withdrawal by 28%, while at the same time increasing the total volume of goods produced by 76%. In 2007, Nestlé invested over CHF 100 million in environment-related industrial improvements, as well as around CHF 170 million in new production facilities in Brazil, Pakistan and China… Read more

Privately held businesses see CSR as necessary for business survival

Privately held businesses (PHBs) are adopting CSR policies not just to save the planet but because they are having to in order to survive and prosper, says the latest Grant Thornton International Business Report. In the survey of over 7,800 privately held businesses in 34 countries, 65 percent of respondents cited recruitment and retention pressures as their main CSR driver, closely followed by cost management concerns (63%). More than half (56%) of PHBs reported having formally adopted transparent CSR policies, a measure of the influence companies higher up the supply chain are having on potential suppliers… Read more
