MEPs call for comprehensive anti-discrimination law
The European Parliament's Employment Committee has spoken out in favour of new legislation banning all forms of discrimination, EurActiv reports. In its draft report, the Parliament examines whether current EU legislation against discrimination actually helps people with disabilities and people of different ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation. The Committee welcomed the European Commission's plans to come forward with new anti-discrimation legislation, despite opposition from members of the centre-right EPP-ED Group. Read more. HP and State of California initiate environmental printing programme
HP is partnering with the State of California to implement a print cartridge recycling and environmental printing programme throughout State agencies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 500 tons per year after full implementation. European CO2 emissions up in 2007
Early analyses reveal a slight increase in EU industrial CO2 emissions in 2007, casting doubts as to the bloc's ability to honour its CO2 reduction commitments on time, EurActiv reports. However, analysts predict emissions will drop in coming years as the Commission begins to tighten the EU's carbon belt. The figures, which may be subject to adjustment by national authorities, indicate a 1.1% overall increase, according to an initial analysis by the carbon market consultancy Point Carbon. Read more. Bouygues Construction wins contract for first positive-energy building
Bouygues Construction subsidiary Norpac, operating in northern France, has won a contract for construction of one of the first positive-energy buildings in France, an archives building for the Nord administrative district in Lille. A positive-energy building is one that produces more energy than it consumes. The future energy consumption of the building will be kept down by enhanced insulation of the building enclosure (walls, roof, glazing), superior air and water tightness, and the choice of innovative, energy-efficient equipment and technologies… Read more

Desire to be thought leader drives green supply chain efforts
41 percent of companies that participated in a recent Aberdeen study have had green supply chain initiatives in place for 1-2 years, and 39 percent have redesigned key parts of their supply chains to be green, Environmental Leader reports. The top four pressures driving companies to focus on sustainable supply chain programmes are the desire to be a thought leader in their industry (51% of companies), the need to control rising fuel and energy costs (49%), the demands to improve competitive advantage and market differentiation (48%), and the requirement to meet government regulatory and compliance demands (31%)… Read more

Muhammad Yunus speaks in Paris, invited by Groupe Caisse d'Epargne
Invited by Groupe Caisse d'Epargne, Muhammad Yunus, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his creation of the first financial institution specializing in microcredit, gave a lecture on March 30 at the Cité des sciences science & technology park in Paris. Thirty years ago, Muhammad Yunus founded the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh to offer small loans, or microcredit, to people excluded from the conventional banking system. GRI Readers’ Choice Awards announces eligible winners
The GRI has announced a short-list of eligible winners for the GRI Readers' Choice Awards. Over 1700 people from 70 countries cast more than 6000 scores for the initial 800 reports submitted for the online vote. After three months of scoring (October-December 2007), a short-list of 78 was created which consisted of reports that had received the highest amount of scores. Scoring was re-opened for one more month (January 2008) for shortlisted reports only. From these 78 shortlisted reports only 45 reports have been declared eligible to receive one of eight awards to be given out in different categories… Read more

Bangkok talks touch on emission reduction targets
Around 1,000 representatives from around the world are in Bangkok this week for a UN meeting to discuss a successor to the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012, Environmental Finance reports. Ideas put forward by the various delegates so far include the auctioning of Assigned Amount Units (emissions credits granted by the UN to countries under the Kyoto Protocol), radical changes to the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), and sectoral-based targets.
