French government proposes measures to retain more older workers
The French government has proposed measures to raise the number of older people in the workforce, in an attempt to tackle its ageing population, BBC reports. Companies could be threatened with penalties if they do not increase their number of staff aged 55 to 64. The most controversial reform is for employees to work 41 years, not 40, to qualify for a full state pension. France has one of the lowest rates of employment of workers aged 55 to 64 in the European Union, but also has one of the highest rates of life expectancy, at 84.5 for women and 77.6 for men. European fund to support post-2012 climate projects
The European Investment Bank (EIB) and four other public financing institutions have launched a 125 million euro fund to boost investment in clean energy projects that are to generate 'carbon credits' after 2012, EurActiv reports. The fund will exclusively purchase and trade 'carbon credits' generated after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012. The aim is to support the market value of environmentally worthwhile projects amid uncertainty over the actual form that the carbon credit trading regime will take after 2012. Read more. Dow Chemical wins ESS Excellence Award for environmental reporting
The Dow Chemical Company was selected as winner of the "Best of the Best" 2008 ESS Excellence Award for leveraging innovative information technology to eliminate more than $2 million in redundant legacy reporting systems and achieve greater efficiency and accuracy by enabling all of its U.S. facilities to use a common environmental reporting process. Global Reporting Initiative works with socially responsible investment researchers to improve data comparability
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has begun working with leading socially responsible investment (SRI) firms from around the world to update and simplify the method by which companies can communicate their environmental and social performance. The goal is to enable companies to provide their sustainability information in a format that can be more easily gathered and enhance the speed and ease of communication with investors. UK advertising watchdog sees big jump in green ad complaints
In 2007, the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority dealt with record numbers of complaints about environmental claims as advertisers increasingly sought to promote their ‘green’ credentials, Environmental Leader reports. Investors to boost RI assets by $137bn by 2010, survey says
Institutional asset owners, mostly pension funds and investment foundations, managing over $1.5 trillion in assets say they plan to increase their commitment to responsible investment by $137 billion before the end of 2010, according to responses to the first RI Landscape 2008 Asset Owners survey.The numbers underline the increasing shift to responsible investment by the world’s biggest institutions, mirroring the success of initiatives such as the UN Principle for Responsible Investment, which has signatories, including fund managers, representing more than $13 trillion… Read more

CSR Solution of the Week: New uses for waste water at Dow Chemical site in the Netherlands
The region of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen in the Netherlands, where Dow Terneuzen site is located, is structurally short in fresh water. Since 2007 Terneuzen's municipal household waste water flowing via a special pipeline to Dow, where it is reused and then used again. Social dialogue is good for working conditions in Europe, report says
Social dialogue is good for working conditions in Europe, according to a new report from the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Eurofound). Unilever commits to certified sustainable palm oil
Unilever has announced its intention to have all of its palm oil certified sustainable by 2015. It will start by using certified palm oil as it becomes available in the second half of 2008 and will look to have all the palm oil it uses in Europe fully traceable by 2012.To achieve this goal, Unilever will work in partnership with governments, suppliers, NGOs and other users of palm oil.
