Big differences in perceptions of the success of corporate social responsibility efforts

People who design and implement Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives (practitioners) have a more positive view of how successful they are than do the outside consultants (providers) who counsel organisations on these efforts, according to a study by Sirota Survey Intelligence and The CRO (Corporate Responsibility Officer) magazine. CSR practitioners are generally more positive than providers about how successful these efforts are in achieving their goals, helping companies to become good corporate citizens, and in assisting them in treating the communities in which they do business well, according to the study, which was based on the views of more than 200 corporate practitioners of CSR efforts and providers of CSR-related services… Read more

Corporate interest in green IT growing, survey says

More than 75 percent of firms surveyed for a new report said that eco-friendly computing is an important part of their IT operations and 15 percent said it's their top priority, GreenerComputing reports. The study "2008 Trends to Watch: Green IT" conducted by London market analyst Datamonitor surveyed 245 chief information officers and IT managers. One out of five companies surveyed said they have already adopted greener computing methods and one-third have plans to put green IT measures in place in the coming years. Read more. EU Commission to suggest labels to help consumers choose 'greener' products

An existing EU labelling scheme for energy-using products should be expanded to cover all manufactured goods, says the latest draft of an upcoming Commission action plan on sustainable consumption and production (SCP), EurActiv reports. The action plan is scheduled for official publication on 14 May. Under the draft action plan, the 2005 Eco-design Directive, which currently covers energy-using products, would be expanded to include non energy-using items like clothing and footwear, furniture, cleaning products, windows, doors, insulation materials, irrigation equipment, concrete products and plasterboard… Read more

Russia says has no plans to cap carbon emissions

Russia says it will not accept binding caps on its greenhouse gas emissions under a new climate regime currently being negotiated to succeed the Kyoto Protocol after 2012, Reuters reports. Former communist countries are well within their emissions targets, which are compared to 1990 levels, because their industries collapsed after they struggled to adapt to free markets.As a top energy producer and consumer, Russia welcomed the fact that Kyoto had not limited its carbon emissions and expected the same of any future climate deal, said Vsevolod Gavrilov, the official in charge of Russia's Kyoto obligations… Read more

Commission plans new sustainability policy measures

The European Commission intends to announce a package of measures next month to stimulate sustainable industrial development across the EU, Environmental Finance reports. The proposals would set framework conditions needed to eliminate market failures and deal with environmental externalities, Didier Herbert, head of the sustainable industrial policy unit of the Commission told a conference organised by the UK's Environmental Industries Commission in London. He said the measures would have three main aims: to help bring better products to market; to promote the EU's fast-growing 'eco-industries'; and to ensure the EU's energy-intensive industries remain competitive with their overseas rivals… Read more

Half of EU citizens on the net, but rural Europe left behind

Out of the half a billion EU citizens, more than 250 million regularly use the internet, according to newly released figures, EUobserver reports. A European Commission report on the results so far for i2010, the EU's digital-led strategy for growth and jobs, further showed that of this number, 80 percent have access to some form of broadband connection. However, nearly 40 percent of Europeans do not use the internet at all. The report also says that figures for national broadband coverage also "hide a gap between rural and urban areas in several countries"… Read more
