UK's carbon footprint grows - sharp rise in car and air travel

Hopes that Britain has turned into a nation of environmentalists were dealt a severe blow yesterday by an official report which found that the nation's carbon footprint was growing, Times Online reports. Although far more households were separating their rubbish for recycling, any benefits to the environment have been more than wiped out by a sharp rise in car journeys, a decline in cycling and a dramatic increase in commercial flights. Gordon Brown calls on business to meet development goals

Some of the largest businesses in the world have been asked by the British Prime Minister to help meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the Business Call to Action meeting organised by Business in the Community on 6 May.  Mr Brown argued that it is the absence of big corporations in developing countries that "blights the lives" of poor people. The PM said that the private sector is of "critical importance" in focussing attention on enterprise, on free and fair trade and open markets and that the MDG targets of reducing infant mortality and providing primary education will only be met with "an extraordinary effort"… Read more

China WTO Tribune hosts Third International CSR Forum, announces "2007 Golden Bee CSR China Honor Roll"

Chinese and international companies operating in China were recognised for their corporate social responsibility efforts at the Third International CSR Forum hosted by China WTO Tribune in Beijing on 25 April. Suppliers see climate change regulation as business risk: survey

An overwhelming majority of supply chain companies believe regulation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is a potential risk to business, according to a Carbon Disclosure Project survey, GreenBiz.com reports. Of the 96 percent of suppliers that believe GHG regulation will be a risk, the most common concerns were taxation of emissions and emission limits.The Carbon Disclosure Project questioned 144 suppliers for its Supply Chain Leadership Collaboration survey. Airline emissions 'far higher than previous estimates', study says

The aviation industry's failure to curb its soaring carbon emissions could lead to the "worst case scenario" for climate change as envisaged by the United Nations, The Independent reports. A study by the world's leading experts has revealed that the carbon dioxide emissions of the aviation industry are 20 per cent higher than previously estimated. The total emissions could reach between 1.2 billion and 1.5 billion tonnes annually by 2025. The European Sustainability Reporting Association (ESRA) has launched a new website on sustainability reporting in European countries. French government proposes measures to retain more older workers

The French government has proposed measures to raise the number of older people in the workforce, in an attempt to tackle its ageing population, BBC reports. Companies could be threatened with penalties if they do not increase their number of staff aged 55 to 64. The most controversial reform is for employees to work 41 years, not 40, to qualify for a full state pension. France has one of the lowest rates of employment of workers aged 55 to 64 in the European Union, but also has one of the highest rates of life expectancy, at 84.5 for women and 77.6 for men. European fund to support post-2012 climate projects

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and four other public financing institutions have launched a 125 million euro fund to boost investment in clean energy projects that are to generate 'carbon credits' after 2012, EurActiv reports. The fund will exclusively purchase and trade 'carbon credits' generated after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012. The aim is to support the market value of environmentally worthwhile projects amid uncertainty over the actual form that the carbon credit trading regime will take after 2012. Read more. Global Reporting Initiative works with socially responsible investment researchers to improve data comparability

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has begun working with leading socially responsible investment (SRI) firms from around the world to update and simplify the method by which companies can communicate their environmental and social performance. The goal is to enable companies to provide their sustainability information in a format that can be more easily gathered and enhance the speed and ease of communication with investors.
