Investor coalition petitions US government on greenhouse gas cuts

Investors managing hundreds of billions of dollars have warned that US politicians must radically overhaul the country’s climate change policies or risk losing the potential for business to find solutions to global warming.  A joint letter issued today by 52 of the world’s largest investors urges the Senate to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions by 60 to 90% below 1990 levels before 2050. Alcatel-Lucent supporting relief effort for victims of earthquake in China

Alcatel-Lucent is actively involved in supporting relief efforts for the victims of the massive earthquake in China. Teams of employees have begun to repair the communications infrastructure helping restore vital communications to the areas impacted by the earthquake. The company has about 500 employees in Chengdu, which is 159 kilometers from the epicenter, and about 10,000 employees in all of China.As soon as the news about the earthquake broke, Alcatel Shanghai Bell established a 24-hour emergency response team to support customers with disaster response and network recovery efforts… Read more

Intel, Grameen announce joint business venture to fuel social and economic development opportunities empowered by technology

IntelIntel Capital and Grameen Trust have announced a new joint business venture to bring about self-sustaining solutions based on information and communications technology (ICT) to help empower the world’s impoverished citizens. The initiative, which will be launched in Bangladesh, is based on the "social business" model created by Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who founded Grameen Bank in 1976 to promote microfinancing and community development. IBM research unveils breakthrough in solar farm technology

IBMIBM has announced a research breakthrough in photovoltaics technology that could significantly reduce the cost of harnessing the Sun's power for electricity. By mimicking the antics of a child using a magnifying glass to burn a leaf or a camper to start a fire, IBM scientists are using a large lens to concentrate the Sun’s power, capturing a record 230 watts onto a centimeter square solar cell, in a technology known as concentrator photovoltaics, or CPV. That energy is then converted into 70 watts of usable electrical power, about five times the electrical power density generated by typical cells using CPV technology in solar farms… Read more

ILO launches process to adopt new international labour standard on HIV/AIDS in the workd of work

The International Labour Office (ILO) is launching a process to adopt a new international labour standard aimed at bolstering the role of the workplace in the global response to HIV/AIDS.HIV is having a devastating effect on the world of work, the ILO says. A majority of the 33.2 million people worldwide now living with HIV are still working and in their most productive years. Industry deal key to EU climate efforts, says Commission

With global negotiations for an international agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol "hardly progressing", the EU is keen to assuage industry concerns about rising emissions costs and prevent plant delocalisation, the Commission said on 15 May. EU energy intensive industries are warning that they would be forced to move operations outside the EU if global talks fail. Plant delocalisation would lead to a situation of 'carbon leakage', whereby EU CO2 emission would not be reduced through cleaner production methods but rather 'leaked' outside the EU's borders… Read more

Executives acknowledge difficulties for mothers re-entering the workforce, global survey says

More than three-quarters of executives (76 percent) indicate that it is difficult for mothers re-entering the workforce today, according to the latest Executive Quiz from Korn/Ferry International. Almost half (49 percent) believe it is as difficult, if not more, for female executives intending to return to work than five years ago.A likely explanation for the perceived difficulty may be that nearly half of executives surveyed (49 percent) work for companies where flextime is not offered for new mothers… Read more

Energy companies fear renewables bubble, KMPG study says

KPMGOne-half of the world’s energy leaders are concerned that a bubble may be developing in the renewable technology sector, according to a survey by KPMG International. In ‘Turning Up the Heat’, a poll of Director-level executives across more than 200 global power and utilities companies, suppliers, distributors and investors, 50 percent of respondents (and nearly two-thirds in Europe), agreed that there is a real risk of a bubble in the renewable energy sector, driving some commentators to compare it to the dotcom boom. Intel announces winners of world’s largest pre-college science fair

IntelThe Intel Foundation has announced top winners of the world’s largest pre-college science fair, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair presented by Agilent Technologies. Natalie Saranga Omattage of Cleveland, Miss., Sana Raoof of Muttontown, N.Y. and Yi-Han Su of Chinese Taipei were selected from more than 1,550 young scientists from 51 countries, regions and territories for their commitment to innovation and science.
