IBM launches online resources to help students prepare for careers of the future
IBM has announced it is creating online resources designed to educate students about hot technologies and help them develop marketable skills in job areas such as enterprise computing, Web 2.0 programming and database management. Six offerings are now available, providing students access to tutorials, forums, games and other resources.Additionally, through the Student Portal on the IBM Academic Initiative web site, students can access a tutorial on Service Science Management and Engineering (SSME), a new academic discipline that brings together ongoing work in the fields of science, engineering, and business management, combined with the study of social and legal sciences… Read more

IBM creates volunteer teams to cultivate emerging markets
The first IBM volunteers have completed their four-week assignments abroad in the framework of the company's new IBM Corporate Service Corps initiative which combines international community service and team leadership development in one programme. Over the next three years, IBM will donate the time and services - valued at about $250 million - of about 600 of its employees for monthlong projects in countries where it wants a bigger footprint. Thai business executives concerned about ethics and CSR, survey says
Thai business executives are concerned about business ethics, sufficiency and environmental responsibility, according to the Thailand Corporate Excellence Survey 2007. The survey found that 40% of respondents were concerned about business ethics or corporate responsibility, up from 32% in the 2006 survey, while 30% paid attention to environmental responsibility and 13% mentioned sufficiency. Bangladesh turns waste into dollars
Poor Bangladeshis are making a living from recycling plastic bottles, turning it into an export industry for South Asian nations, Reuters reports.Bangladesh exports over 20,000 tonnes of PET flakes created in the 3,000 factories located across the country worth $10 million last year. UK: Mobile phone industry urged to improve age filtering
In the UK, the mobile phone industry is considering introducing cinema-style classifications for mobile phone content to prevent children from accessing unsuitable websites, the Guardian reports.More than half of nine-year-olds and 95% of 15-year-olds in the UK already have a mobile phone.The industry's four-year-old code of conduct bars content deemed suitable only for people over the age of 18 from being seen by children. New report assesses countries' climate change vulnerability
A new report promises to help global companies assess climate change-related vulnerabilities of the countries in which they operate, GreenBiz reports.According to the Maplecroft Climate Change Risk Report, many of the countries least vulnerable to the negative effects of climate change are also the world's biggest emitters of greenhouse gases blamed for climate change. Roughly 75 percent of the 20 countries most vulnerable to climate change are located in Africa, the continent that produces the least carbon dioxide emissions… Read more

France: Negative attitude to older workers creates a business opportunity
France has a poor record when it comes to keeping older people in the workforce, the Economist reports. The retirement age is 60, not 65 as in most developed countries. In 2005 only 37.8% of people aged 55-64 had jobs, versus 56.8% in Britain and 44.9% in Germany. Now companies are worried about losing their most skilled workers, especially as the baby-boom generation nears retirement. Engineers and people with high levels of technical skill are most in demand, says Caroline Young, the founder of Experconnect, an employment agency in Paris which places retired people… Read more
