Cisco has released its fourth annual Cisco Corporate Social Responsbility Report for 2008, which covers its CSR philosophy and progress on initiatives directed at improving the health, welfare, and sustainability of its business and the communities where the company operates worldwide. The report is divided into four main sections covering Cisco and its employees, the environment, society and CSR governance. Toyota gives root to UNEP’s Billion Tree Campaign in Europe
The Toyota Fund for Europe (TFfE) – with support from NGO partners and Toyota companies – will plant 1.2 million trees in Europe by the end of next year as part of UNEP’s Billion Tree Campaign. The initiative, launched in 2007 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is calling on citizens globally to plant seven billion trees – roughly one tree per person – by the end of 2009. Since 2007, Toyota has helped plant some 350,000 trees and invested an equivalent amount in related activities, as part of a company-wide response to climate change… Read more

Report urges businesses to take proactive approach to water management
A new report from global management consultancy Arthur D Little warns businesses that merely adopting a reactive response to water management can damage corporate performance. The report argues that it is imperative for companies to assess their water footprint, broken down by product/service, by value chain position and by geographic region. Orange Foundation supports activities for visually impaired at Domaine de Chantilly
The Orange Foundation is supporting a programme of activities for the visually impaired of the Domaine de Chantilly Foundation. On Thursday 27 November, it will invite two classes of schoolchildren, one sighted and one visually impaired, to visit the Grand Stables of the Domaine with help from the Orange Foundation. The tactile visit of stables themed allows both sighted and visually impaired children to learn about the equestrian world. These activities are designed to complement initiatives already in place on the Domaine de Chantilly and reflect the Orange Foundation’s commitment to making culture as widely available as possible to the visually and aurally impaired… Read more

Vodafone takes top spot in 2008 Accountability Rating
Vodafone is the most accountable of the world’s 100 largest corporations (the G-100), according to the 2008 Accountability Rating, published on 14 November. Now in its fifth year, the Accountability Rating, compiled by AccountAbility and Csrnetwork, measures the extent to which companies build responsible practices into the way they do business and their impact on the economies, societies and environments in which they operate. 2009 Edition of the L’ORÉAL-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards
In conjunction with World Science Day on November 10, 2008, the jury of the L’ORÉAL-UNESCO Awards For Women in Science announced the names of the five exceptional women scientists from around the world who will receive the 2009 L’ORÉAL-UNESCO Awards. BITC launches Voluntary Code of Practice on Employing Migrant Workers/Overseas Staff in great Britain
Business in the Community (BITC) has launched The Voluntary Code of Practice on Employing Migrant Workers/Overseas Staff in Great Britain. The code provides a guide for employers to recruiting, employing and facilitating the integration of migrant workers into the UK. Sponsored by Produce World and 2 sisters Food Group, the Voluntary Code of Practice was developed by the BITC Migrant Worker Integration Group. The group also presented a Position Paper proposing recommendations for both Government and business to enable the continued employment of migrant workers in lower skilled and seasonal jobs… Read more

Women should seize opportunity on tackling cybercrime
By educating students in general and women in particular to become innovators, Europe will be able to increase supply and match demand for IT skilled workers, according to a Financial Times article by Antonio Herrera of Cisco and Elena Bonfiglioli of Microsoft, writing as co-chairs of the e-Skills Industry Leadership Board.Demand for IT skilled workers in the EU is expected to reach 250,000 per year by 2010 but only 180,000 are likely to be available.
