Cellphone makers pledge universal charger by 2012
Leading cellphone makers have committed to developing a universal charger for all new handsets, saying the move will benefit both consumers and the environment, Sustainable Life Media reports. The industry tradegroup GSMA is spearheading the collaborative effort to design a universal charging solution by 2012. The new charger will also meet strict energy-efficiency guidelines, GSMA says. Global business groups say climate deal 'possible'
Business organisations from across the world, including Europe, the United States, China, India and Brazil, have offered their support for a global climate change agreement at this year's UN meeting in Copenhagen, EurActiv reports. In their joint statement, the groups called for the establishment a global framework to tackle climate change that includes all countries and "gives equal attention to mitigation, adaptation and deforestation". This framework, they added, should "develop measurable, reportable and verifiable methodologies" to monitor greenhouse gas reductions and "make them a priority"… Read more

Companies getting better at communicating CSR online, but investors want more
Public companies are using the web more for telling their CSR stories, uncovering information that has before been stated only in annual or special reports, IR Magazine reports on the findings of a survey by communications consultancy Hallvarsson & Halvarsson (H&H). In a review of 700 European companies, H&H found that 78 percent are dedicating part of their corporate website to CSR, up from 73 percent last year. Intel Ireland invites schools to participate in "Week of Wonder"
On 9-13 February, Intel Ireland participated in "Week of Wonder", a nationwide week-long series of events held to coincide with National Engineers week in Ireland. The programme is coordinated by STEPS to engineering and is supported by Discover Science & Engineering and Engineers Ireland. The initiative was hosted across Ireland with Intel in Leixlip holding a number of events throughout the week. Employees were asked to volunteer to help out at the various activities planned for the week, such as primary school tours for local school children… Read more

IBM "serious game" provides training to tackle global business challenges
IBM has announced INNOV8 v.2, a new version of its "serious game" that helps students and professionals hone their business and technology skills in a video game format. Building on the success of the original INNOV8 in the academic community, INNOV8 v.2 will be available at no cost to businesses and academic institutions for simulations and training. The new version features puzzles and tasks that challenge players to tackle real-world challenges. It also includes a new global collaboration feature for players to work with virtual teammates, as well as three new game scenarios: 'Green' Supply Chain: Players evaluate a traditional supply chain model and are tasked with reducing a fictional company's carbon footprint… Read more

Business and Biodiversity Initiative launches Internet portal
Well-known companies from Germany, Japan and Brazil, including Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, are supporting the German government, which currently holds the Presidency of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in its efforts to bring the CBD further forward. Employers urged to innovate to avoid sackings and stress
Employers have been urged to be more innovative in order to avoid redundancies and "maintain employee engagement, well-being and productivity as rising work intensity threatens to increase stress and conflict", the Financial Times reports. Guidance notes to employers, issued by Acas, the arbitration and conciliation service, and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, say that businesses need "to think creatively about how to reduce employment costs", rather than "making people redundant and recruiting again" when demand recovers. First Vattenfall charging station for MINI E cars opens in Berlin
Vattenfall Europe AG and the BMW Group have successfully launched their shared project "MINI E Berlin Powered by Vattenfall" with test drives on the streets of Berlin. The electric cars are being charged up at Vattenfall's first charging station in Berlin-Treptow, and more stations are due to be installed soon. 100 men and women from Berlin will be given an opportunity to test out the cars under everyday conditions during two user phases each lasting six months. A "low energy" Italian school insulated with Dow STYROFOAMâ„¢
A new "eco-sustainable" elementary school was recently inaugurated in Correggio, Italy, following the "Klima House" standards on low energy consumption. In fact, the school will generate more renewable and clean energy than it consumes during its lifecycle.
