Employability Alliance supports 6 training hubs in Scotland

The Scotland chapter of the Europe-wide European Alliance on Skills for Employability is supporting the establishment of six training hubs to deliver IT, employability and pre-vocational skills training to address the employability needs of disadvantaged groups. The six hubs identify, recruit, train, support and quality assure a number of ‘satellite' learndirect scotland branded learning centres. To implement the programme, a broad partnership was set up by Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, Banff and Buchan College, Dundee College, Glasgow South West Regeneration Agency, JHP Training and University of the West of Scotland… Read more

Italian organisations launch Local Alliance for Climate Responsibility

On the 16th of March, the Province of Livorno in collaboration with Impronta Etica (CSR Europe's national partner in Italy), the Province of Ferrara and the Coordination Italian Local Agenda 21 presented the Opening Conference for the Project LACRE (Local Alliance for Climate Responsibility), a European project funded by the LIFE + fund. ArcelorMittalArcelorMittal USA has partnered with the American Red Cross to create a dynamic program that underscores ArcelorMittal's commitment to health and safety. Bi-annual FTSE4Good Index Series review completed

The FTSE Group, a London-based provider of stock market indices, has released an updated FTSE4Good Index Series, SocialFunds.com reports. The video aims to get students interested in participating to think differently about satisfying our needs in tomorrow's low-carbon economy. UK survey: Corporate giving to be cut by a third

Business donations to good causes are expected to be down by over a third - around £500million - as a result of the economics downturn according to a new survey of 450 senior business leaders in the UK. The survey, commissioned by The Social Investment Consultancy and carried out by YouGovStone, found that corporate giving is expected to drop by 34% this year, with 60% of respondents expecting their organisation to cut its charity budget.British business gives an estimated £1.4 billion a year in revenue and support each year to good causes… Read more

Alcatel-Lucent has announced its support to the 2009 Petit Poucet Innovation Award for student entrepreneurs in France. The 2009 prize was awarded to a renewable energy project by four engineering students (Ecole Centrale Paris / Lille & ESTP). UK: Retailers launch new recycling label

Leading retailers in the UK have launched a new universal on-pack recycling label to provide customers with standardised information on whether packaging can be recycled. The single industry-supported label replaces the potentially confusing range of symbols previously used, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).The new label will have three categories depending on how likely it is that a customer's local authority will accept specific packaging materials for recycling: widely recycled, check local recycling, and not currently recycled. Biochar: Is the hype justified?

There's a flurry of worldwide interest in biochar tehcnology, but is the hype justified, the BBC asks. Proponents of the technology say biochar - biomass "cooked" by pyrolysis - is so effective at storing carbon that it should be included in the next global climate agreement. Experiments in Australia, US and Germany are already showing some remarkable results.But for all its apparent benefits, there are substantial barriers to the progress of biochar. Perfecting and disseminating the technology at an affordable price will be an issue, and current financial systems reward energy production from biomass and waste - not carbon storage… Read more

Journalists criticised over climate change reporting

The task of informing the public about climate change should not be left to journalists, according to the chair of the International Scientific Congress on Climate Change, SciDev.Net reports.
