European Inventors of the year: Gifted guardians of life and the environment
Two major concerns of citizens - health and environment - were the big winners when the European Commission and the European Patent Office (EPO) presented the 2009 European Inventor of the Year awards on 28 April in Prague. Honoured were 4 inventions: a drug to combat chronic myelogenous leukaemia, a malaria drug based on a herbal agent, enabling the commercial use of solar energy and a highly efficient heat exchanger. Coca-Cola introduces green innovations, recycling programme in Washington
Coca-Cola is going green in Washington, D.C. The Coca-Cola Company and Coca-Cola Enterprises are introducing a series of innovations designed to reduce the Coca-Cola system's environmental footprint at each step in the manufacturing, distribution and sales processes. These efforts include climate-friendly beverage coolers, hybrid electric delivery trucks and trailers, and a recycling programme for the National Mall and Memorial Parks. Austria: respACT hosts stakeholder dialogue on future of CSR
As part of the dialogue on the future of CSR, CSR Europe's Austrian national partner organisation respACT has since October 2008 been working intensively on a revision of the Austrian mission on CSR and Sustainability from the year 2003. Eurofound launches special website for European Day on Solidarity and Cooperation between Generations
Over the last 50 years there has been enormous economic and social progress in Europe and - although there are large regional and social differences - Europeans are living longer than ever before: on average eight to nine years more than in 1960. This coincides with other demographic developments: fewer children are being born, which will mean fewer people paying into state pension and healthcare systems, and a smaller pool of potential carers. Top Green-IT Organizations find fertile ground for innovation
Just as a seed sprouts and stretches toward the sun, the green-IT movement has grown and pushed skyward in the past year ComputerWorld reports.In its second annual Top Green-IT Organizations issue, ComputerWorlds showcases the achievements at 12 IT departments that are reducing power demands and using technology to create energy efficiencies. Microsoft unveils web site to showcase community impact
Microsoft has unveiled an online resource that showcases the company's impact on local communities globally. The new tool named Microsoft Local Impact Map (www.microsoft.com/LocalImpactMap) chronicles over 350 case studies and a wealth of data that demonstrate how Microsoft's partnerships and technology are positively impacting over 230 countries and regions around the world. The online map allows users to find information about the worldwide technology sector, as well as Microsoft-specific data, including national-level and global data on technology readiness, broadband penetration and technology-related employment as well as Microsoft-related employment, local revenue generated and corporate citizenship programmes… Read more

World Day for Safety and Health at Work commemorated amid concerns over impact of global economic crisis
World Day for Safety and Health at Work, taking place on 28 April, is an international campaign to promote safe, healthy, and decent work. The ILO Programme on Safety and Health at Work (SafeWork) has estimated that nearly 1 million workers suffer a workplace accident and more than 5,500 workers die each day due to accidents or disease from their work. Commission consults on a possible European Foundation Statute
The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the difficulties foundations face when operating cross-border, on the content of a possible European Foundation Statute and on how a Statute might affect donors' and founders' attitudes. Nestlé launches major initiatives in nutrition, water and rural development
Nestlé has announced three new company initiatives aimed at creating new partnerships with governments, NGOs and small enterprises. The announcement comes as Nestlé launches a two-day forum on Creating Shared Value in New York on April 27-28 in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships and the Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations. The initiatives include an expanded education programme focused on nutrition, health and wellness for school age children around the world, a research and development centre in Africa, and a new Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared Value, awarded every other year to foster innovative approaches to solve problems of nutrition, water and rural development… Read more

Slovakia: 6th international conference on corporate responsibility
On May 13 and 14, the Pontis Foundation and the Business Leaders Forum will organize the VI. Annual Conference on Corporate Responsibility and the workshop Starting with Corporate Responsibility.
