BT and Unicef to help bridge digital divide in China
BT has launched a joint initiative with UNICEF which will bring modern technology to schools in poor rural areas of China to improve access to high quality education. BT is investing £500,000 (RMB5 million) to benefit up to 6,000 students and 1,700 teachers across four provinces - Qinghai, Ningxia, Yunnan and Jiangxi - where there are high-levels of digital exclusion.Computers, internet access, multi-media projectors and other educational materials will be provided in up to 40 rural schools which are under-resourced and have severely limited access to modern teaching aids and equipment… Read more

CSR in China - building responsible competitiveness in global supply chains

Business Leaders Forum announces winners of 18th Health Safety and Environment Award
The Business Leaders Forum, CSR Europe's national partner organisation in the Czech Republic, has announced the winners of the 18th year of its Health Safety and Environment Award.The winners were Rokospol a.s. and the local authority Kněžice.Rokospol a.s. was recognised for its project "Paint color detox". Detox color is a breakthrough product in the active protection of the environment. European Commission launches call for proposals to support national CSR platforms
The European Commission has recently launched a call for proposals to support new or existing national CSR platforms. The overall objective of the proposed measure is to increase the uptake of CSR amongst European enterprises, especially SMEs, in support of the Growth and Jobs Strategy and sustainable development. To achieve this, the Commission will co-finance collaborative platforms for the promotion of CSR at national level.The deadline for proposals is on 17 July 2009. Read more (European Commission)

World Business Summit on Climate Change outlines six steps for global climate treaty
Global business leaders assembled in Copenhagen at the World Business Summit on Climate Change on 26 May issued "The Copenhagen Call," a statement that sets out the elements business believes are required to forge an effective new global climate treaty.Business announced that a new global climate treaty must set bold targets for emissions reductions by 2020 and 2050, limiting the global average rise in temperature to a maximum of 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels. Firms increase quality of customer service and market share through diversity initiatives
Employers have recognised that diversity and inclusivity in the workplace will help them weather the recession, HR Magazine reports. Almost three-quarters of organisations (74%) surveyed by Opportunity Now found a link between their internal diversity strategies and employee engagement while 40% report improved customer service because of diversity initiatives, Almost a quarter (22%) think diversity has helped them increase their market share.Diversity is also growing as an issue in boardrooms, with 55% making board members directly accountable for delivering gender objectives… Read more

Industry calls for funding to cut CO2 emissions
More than 500 industry leaders gathering in Copenhagen this week are calling on heads of state and government to strike a strong deal to reduce carbon emissions, stressing that long-term policy clarity is required as well as financial backing, EurActiv reports. Business leaders are reportedly working on a draft statement that would call for emissions to be cut by at least 50% by 2050, an ambitious target which has also been endorsed by the United Nations.
