Slovakia: 1200 volunteers participate in "Our Bratislava" initiative
On two days in June, 1,196 volunteers from 40 companies and organisations joined the third annual corporate volunteerism event titled Our Bratislava. The volunteers cleaned Mountain Park and premises of the Devín castle, restored playgrounds, planted flowers in gardens, provided trainings on presentation skills, and much more. In total, 53 projects were implemented in 44 non-profit organisations. Slovakia: Business Leaders Forum hosts CSR seminar for SMEs
The Pontis Foundation, Business Leaders Forum and CSR Europe organized on 18 June in Bratislava a seminar for small and medium enterprises on the topic of Corporate Social Responsibility - Economy, Ecology, Society. Businesses maintain spending on training
Four out of five business leaders say their companies maintained or increased spending on training in the past six months, rather than slashing it as in previous recessions, the Financial Times reports. The finding, in a survey of nearly 1,000 leaders by the Institute of Directors, suggests that companies see training as a way of boosting staff morale, increasing productivity and preparing to take advantage of an upturn. Energy bills 'too low' to combat climate change, UK report says
Consumers will need to pay more for energy if the UK is to have any chance of developing the technologies needed to tackle climate change, according to a group of leading scientists and engineers, the Guardian reports. In a new Royal Society study, the experts said that the government must put research into alternatives to fossil fuel much higher among its priorities, and argued that current policy in the area was "half-hearted". Unilever joins Climate Savers® Computing Initiative
Unilever has announced its membership of the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, a non-profit group of consumers, businesses and conservation organisations dedicated to reducing the energy consumption of computers. Unilever will work on the adoption of energy-efficient PCs and servers and to increase the awareness and use of computer power management strategies. SAP and PlaNet Finance join forces to create sustainable business models through access to microfinance and technology
SAP has made a commitment to provide financial, software and expert assistance to PlaNet Finance, an international non-profit organisation that offers support services to microfinance institutions (MFIs). SAP and PlaNet Finance aim to improve the microfinance sector through a combination of microfinancing, the use of new technology and the creation of value-chain extensions that help entrepreneurs at the base of the economic pyramid create sustainable businesses. Swedish EU presidency to focus on economic crisis and climate change
As Sweden prepares to assume the EU's rotating presidency on 1 July, business, civil society and human rights groups alike are lobbying Stockholm to find a way out of the financial, economic and climate crises by promoting structural reform and ambitious policies, EurActiv reports. In a speech on 23 June, Fredrik Reinfeldt, Sweden's prime minister, set out his government's priorities for their EU presidency. Europe moves to reduce pollutants
European environment ministers agreed on 25 June on a sweeping plan to reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide, dust and other pollutants spewed out by thousands of industrial facilities across Europe, the Financial Times reports. The legislation would reduce emissions of such pollutants by nearly a third by 2020, according to the European Commission. The measures would save up to €27bn ($38bn, £23bn) in annual health costs and spare thousands of lives by improving the quality of soil, air and water. Read more (FT)

Coca-Cola Hellenic publishes 6th CSR report
Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company has announced the release of its sixth annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report noting progress in key focus areas across its 28 countries of operation in 2008. Climate protection and resource conservation have become primary focus areas for the Company’s CSR efforts. Over the course of 2008, construction began on the first of 15 combined heat and power (CHP) units.
