IBM study: 60% of executives say CSR has increased in importance over past year
A new IBM survey of 224 business leaders worldwide shows that 60 percent believe corporate social responsibility (CSR) has increased in importance over the past year. Only 6 percent say it is a lower priority.The study surveyed leaders on three areas related to sustainability: operations, supply chain and customers. The results indicate that operational information needs to be more timely, supply chain information is still too insular and more customer information is needed. Only 22% of consumers purchasing sustainable products
A new study on consumer behavior from Deloitte indicates that there is an unrealized, latent consumer demand for sustainable products, Sustainable Life Media reports.The study, commissioned by the Grocery Manufacturer's Association (GMA), surveyed over 6,000 shoppers in 11 major retail markets. According to the study, almost half of consumers consider sustainability in purchasing decisions. However, only 22% walked out of the store with sustainable products. Human rights website adds work by UN Representative for Business and Human Rights
The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, a UK-based non-profit whose website contains information on the human rights records of 4,000 corporations in 180 countries, has added to its website a portal for "materials relating to the work of the United Nations Secretary General's Special Representative on business & human rights, John Ruggie", SocialFunds.com reports. Ruggie, who is a Professor in International Legal Studies at Harvard Law School, was first appointed as Special Representative in 2005… Read more

Commission launches public-private partnerships for green cars, energy-efficient buildings and factories of the future
As part of the European Economic Recovery Plan, the European Commission is launching three Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) aimed at boosting research efforts in three large industrial sectors - automotive, construction and manufacturing - which have been particularly affected by the economic downturn and where innovation can significantly contribute towards a more green and sustainable economy. Students from 40 countries collaborate with IBM to build a Smarter Planet
Eight of 10 students want universities to revamp traditional learning environments while over 90 percent want to join or start a Green Advocacy group at their campus. 64 percent of students believe that the world has a chance to reverse carbon emissions by 2025, and 60 percent believe that education and efficient transportation offer the best hope for sustainability of our cities. Gender pay gap starts to grow, UK report says
“Lack of action” by the government to break down gender stereotypes in schools is partly to blame for the failure to narrow the gap between men’s and women’s pay, the Financial Times reports on the findings of an official report in the UK. The Women and Work Commission, established to recommend ways to close the gender pay gap, said that women were still paid on average 22.6 per cent an hour less than men. That had fallen from 27.5 per cent 10 years ago, but progress was stalling and there had been a slight rise from 21.9 per cent in 2007. Read more (FT)

EU launches reflection on future green policies
The European Union needs to reconcile its growth and jobs objectives with long-term environmental goals, says the European Commission in a report taking stock of the bloc’s decade-old sustainable development strategy, EurActiv reports. The EU has made a positive contribution to sustainable development, but "unsustainable trends persist in several areas," notes the report, which assesses progress made since the Union launched its sustainable development strategy in 2001. Companies and governments lag NGOs in driving sustainability but new corporate leaders emerging, according to experts
Business and political leaders are lagging far behind NGO leaders and social entrepreneurs in driving the move to sustainability, according to a new global poll of sustainability experts. Findings from the inaugural annual Sustainability Survey by GlobeScan and SustainAbility show that thought leaders across the world view corporate leadership on sustainability to be far behind that of NGOs and social entrepreneurs, and only slightly better than governments in pushing the sustainability agenda forward… Read more
