Toyota Motor Europe hosts Roads to Respect Safety Camp in Brussels
Twenty-five young engineering students have paid a visit to the Toyota Motor Europe (TME) headquarters in Brussels as part of a five-day Roads to Respect (R2R) Safety Camp. During the visit on 30 September, the engineers - from six different European countries, took part in awards ceremony which recognised the three most successful students from 2008. Making mobile phones greener
As stakeholders and governments are striving to lessen the environmental impact of mobile phones, mobile phone producers are moving to meet the demands of an eco-conscious society. Market research organisation Gartner estimates 1.22 billion handsets were sold in 2008 and mobile phone manufacturers are now introducing models which reduce their environmental impact. Brussels seeks rise in green research
Europe will fail to meet its climate change goals and risks falling behind in green technology unless governments spend an extra €50bn on research over the next decade, according to a European Commission proposal to be released today. The Commission will call on member states to increase funding from €3bn to €8bn ($12bn, £7bn) a year to hasten technological breakthroughs and ensure that European companies do not lose out to competitors elsewhere in a burgeoning industry. 4th Annual barometer on Sustainable Development carried out among La Poste employees
The results of this year's Annual Barometer on Sustainable Devlopment shows higher priority for sustainable development actions than last year. For example, the issue of gender equality is a priority for 92% of La Poste employees. Recruitment of more disabled people was considered priority by 82% of the surveyed. Other priority areas included fuel savings and reducing pollution derived from transport (88% respectively), investing in electric vehicles (79%) and using less paper (87%).Sustainable development actions are already implemented in many workplaces and 65% state that they are well informed about the actions and projects of La Poste in regard to sustainable development… Read more

Germany’s renewables support under threat
Germany's incoming government has signalled that it is to extend the life of nuclear power plants and tighten the country's generous renewable energy subsidy law (the EEG). While the junior coalition partner, the business-orientated Free Democrats (FDP), has moderated more radical plans for reforming the EEG, it wants more stringent EEG reviews, to be carried out every two instead of four years. US Chamber of Commerce in divide over climate change
The issue of global warming and associated legislation is creating a serious rift between the US Chamber of Commerce and major American companies, which favour legislation that would limit carbon dioxide emissions. On 28 September, Exelon Corp announced it would not renew its membership in the Chamber, a decision that was preceded by California utility PG&E Corp and PNM Resources Inc. Even Nike Inc was close to leaving the Chamber, and expressed criticism against the Chambers challenge of the US Environmental Protection Agency's authority to regulate climate-warming carbon dioxide emissions as pollution… Read more
