European Union unveils internet innovation strategy

The European Union has outlined its vision of a better connected world, unveiling a new strategy designed to support innovation through investment. Viviane Reding, EU commissioner for information society and media, said in a speech today that the internet has the power to make European systems smarter and more efficient across the board. Reding suggested that the internet could lead to lower emissions, better healthcare, and less congested roads, for example, if the information it contains is harnessed correctly and efficiently. EU summit to back 95% emissions reduction goal

Europe will attempt to reassert its global leadership on climate change during a two-day summit in Brussels (29-30 October), with EU leaders set to back emissions reductions "of at least 80-95%" for the developed world by 2050, according to a draft statement obtained by EurActiv. The EU's pledge comes as part of international negotiations on climate change to take place in Copenhagen next month but will only become effective if other developed nations follow suit. IBM teams up with universities and scientists for research collaboration on risk management

Nestle Waters Launches YouTube Video Campaign

Nestle Waters North America has launched a new YouTube campaign featuring three videos which raise awareness about the impacts of the bottled water industry on the environment, as well as water use by entire beverage industry. The campaign is designed to shed light on the sustainable attributes of bottling water for resale, contrasting this against the sustainability of the bottled beverage industry. Happiness is more important than money for UK employees

Achieving personal happiness and contentment is a top priority for many UK employees and nearly three in five (58%) have said they would choose to earn less money if they could work for a firm that provides them with the time to pursue their interests. According to the O2 Values Working Report 95% of the 1,201 respondents thought having a good work-life balance was important to them and almost half (48%) said it was more valuable now than 12 months ago. Two new publications released by UNEP

UNEP recently released two new publications. The report 'Catalysing Low Carbon Growth in Developing Economies: public finance mechanisms to scale up private sector investment in climate solutions' outlines Ways of triggering multi-billion dollar, low carbon technology investments in developing economies. Much of the money will come from the private sector but will only flow if creative public policies that reflect the differing circumstances of developing economies are swiftly adopted. Climate chief Lord Stern: give up meat to save the planet

People will need to turn vegetarian if the world is to conquer climate change, according to a leading authority on global warming. In an interview with The Times, Lord Stern of Brentford said: "Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world's resources. A vegetarian diet is better." Direct emissions of methane from cows and pigs is a significant source of greenhouse gases. Methane is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas. Read more (The Times)
