HP talks to the winner of the 2009 Ashridge Sustainable Innovation Award

HPAt the beginning of October, the winners of the 2009 Ashridge Sustainable Innovation Competition were announced at the Eco-Efficient Economy Conference dinner in Linköping in Sweden. The essay competition, run jointly by Ashridge Business School , the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and HP, invited MBA students and postgraduates to submit ideas on how organisations can create value from the shift to a low carbon economy. HP and WWF publish new white paper: ‘From Green IT to Greening with IT’

HPThe World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has published a new white paper entitled ‘From Green IT to Greening with IT' which was supported by HP. The paper looks at how opportunities can be created out of the global financial crisis to ensure accelerated CO2 reductions with low carbon IT solutions. It also brings to a conclusion a major joint initiative between HP and WWF EMEA called ‘ICT Innovation as a Driver of Climate Change Solutions'. Read more (HP) or read publication

Investors and stock exchanges discuss ESG listings ‘comply or explain’ at UN headquarters

UN Secretary General Ban-ki Moon, has kicked off a high-level meeting at the UN headquarters in New York between major institutional investors including the Norwegian Global Pension Fund and France's national pensions reserve fund (FRR) and global stock exchange executives in New York to look at ways of tightening up environmental, social and governance criteria for company listings. Among discussion topics at the UNPRI-organised event, was the introduction of a ‘comply or explain' requirement for companies to put an annual sustainability report to a shareholder vote at their annual general meetings… Read more

What do Europeans think about their working conditions?

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has recently released the results of a Europe-wide opinion poll on safety and health at work. According to the findings, there is widespread concern among European citizens that the current economic crisis could adversely affect health and safety at work, putting at risk the improvements that they report having seen over the last five years. Many Europeans also feel well informed about occupational safety and health and consider it an important factor when choosing a new job. Read more (European Commission)

Toyota Motor Hungary Takes Part in Mobility Week

ToyotaToyota Motor Hungary (TMH) participated in European Mobility Week (16 to 22 September 2009) with a number of activities in Budapest. The events aimed to motivate citizens to reduce their fuel consumption and to publicise Toyota's hybrid technology and the company's environmental philosophy. As part of Mobility Week, TMH took part in a conference on Green Mobility at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. European electricity firms line up behind plug-in cars

Europe's electricity suppliers have come together to push for a standardised recharging infrastructure for plug-in electric cars. The move will pave the way for consumers to refuel vehicles at charging stations across Europe. CEOs from electricity companies gathered in Brussels on 27 October to discuss how greater harmonisation of the European energy supply market can be achieved without jeopardising competition. Volkswagen signs ‘Global Labor Charter’

VolkswagenOn 29 October 2009 the ‘Global Labor Charter’ was signed by VW Group Board of Management, International Metalworkers' Federation and VW employee representatives. As the first employer, the Volkswagen Group has adopted a "Global Labor Charter". The Charter sets out binding minimum standards for the entire Group in the area of the participation rights of employee representative bodies at the level of individual facilities. Pow! Comic-strip heroes fight against corruption

It is a comic book collection without a cape, dodgy mask or death ray in sight. There are, though, plenty of baddies. The first week of November sees the publication of a new anthology aiming to encourage young people to get interested in - and angry at - corruption in its many forms and guises. The people behind the project are Ctrl.Alt.Shift, which describes itself as an experimental youth initiative. It was set up last year by the international development agency Christian Aid and aims to use art - whether comics, film or music - to create a new generation of activists. Read more (Guardian)

Solar power from Sahara a step closer

A $400bn (£240bn) plan to provide Europe with solar power from the Sahara has moved a step closer to reality with the formation of a consortium of 12 companies to carry out the work.
