ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor granted Department of Energy funding

ArcelorMittalThe United States Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor funding for its gas flare capture project. ArcelorMittal is one of only 9 organisations across the US to be granted funding, under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, for projects that promote the use of combined heat and power, district energy systems, waste energy recovery systems, and energy efficiency. The energy saved from the Blast Furnace Gas Flare Capture project will be the equivalent to the amount of electricity needed to power 30,000 households for a year… Read more

Orange launches People Projects: a new online community service designed to help people carry out a project

France Telecom OrangeOrange is launching People Projects, a new Facebook application that lets people communicate with their network and create groups online that want to support, or be part of community projects.  In line with Orange's brand vision "Together we can do more", the new service is making it possible for individuals to call on the internet community to contribute to  their projects - connecting people through volunteering in a powerful way. Power firms unveil low-carbon electricity 'choices'

Europe's electricity companies have published a new report setting out a number of scnearios for shifting Europe's electricity supply towards a carbon-neutral path by 2050. The 'Power Choices' study was presented to MEPs, NGOs and industry groups in the European Parliament on 10 November as world leaders gear up for next month's Copenhagen climate summit. However, the report was dismissed by the renewable energy lobby, which said it failed to tackle climate change. 16% of Europeans report experiencing discrimination – new opinion survey

Around one in six people in Europe claim to have personally experienced discrimination in the past year, according to a new opinion survey released by the European Commission on 9 November 2009. Meanwhile, 64% of Europeans are concerned that the recession will contribute to more age discrimination in the job market. The latest Eurobarometer results come ahead of this year's European Equality Summit, to be held in Stockholm on 16 and-17 November. Personal experience of discrimination by respondents remains largely unchanged since the same survey was carried out last year, with age being the most common reason (6% of respondents)… Read more

2009 State of Corporate Citizenship report shows corporate responsibility weathering the economic storm

The findings of the 2009 State of Corporate Citizenship in the United States reveal that, despite the recession, corporate citizenship practices are ingrained in increasing numbers of American businesses. A majority (54 percent) of business leaders report that attention to corporate citizenship efforts is even more important in a recession. GfK Custom Research North America Identifies new 'age of green pragmatism'

Market research firm GfK Custom Research North America has identified a new "age of green pragmatism," finding Americans' attitudes towards environmentalism is shifting away from altruistic motivations towards more practical drivers such as saving money, health, getting value and promoting safety. While more consumers are reporting that they are making lasting changes in their environmental behavior, new data from GfK Roper Consulting shows 60% of Americans find green products are still too expensive (up six points from 2006)… Read more
