It’s kickoff time for the 2010 Orange Book Award, the internet users’ literature prize

France Telecom OrangeOrange is launching the second Orange Book Award, presided over by Erik Orsenna. The Orange Book Award, created in 2009, is the first internet users' litterature prize to involve a community. It honours works of fiction (novels and short stories) written in French and published in France between 1 January and 30 April of the current year; the winner is the book which receives the most internet users' votes. For the first time in a large scale competition, web users are invited to participate throughout the process from the early stages, when they discuss their favorite books, through the selection of candidates and then finalists, to the final vote in which they alone take part… Read more

Three-hundred young scientists to be honored as semifinalists in the Intel® Science Talent Search 2010

IntelThree-hundred seniors from 175 high schools across the country will be named semifinalists in the Intel® Science Talent Search 2010, a program of Society for Science & the Public. The Intel Science Talent Search encourages students to tackle challenging scientific questions and develop the skills to solve the problems of tomorrow. Intel believes that young people are the key to solving global challenges, and that a solid math and science foundation coupled with skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and digital literacy are crucial for their success. The Aviva Foundation is helping Polish sportsmen and women prepare for the London 2012 Paralympic Games

The Aviva Foundation has started a grant programme for disabled sportsmen and women and their trainers, which will make their preparations for the London 2012 Paralympic Games easier. The Foundation has entered into long-term collaboration with the Polish Paralympic Committee. The grant programme, which will last until 2012, will help 50 sportsmen and women and 18 trainers. This is almost half of the national team. UK investors join with politicians for mandatory GHG reporting call

A group of UK institutional investors and corporations has joined with over 50 UK Members of Parliament (MPs), to write to Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, calling for greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting to be made mandatory for all large UK organisations as soon as possible. The letter came after a report by the Carbon Disclosure Project that showed some companies falling far behind on carbon targets. Read more (Responsible Investor)

Europe catches up on clean tech venture investment

Venture capital investment in clean technology continued strongly in 2009 despite the financial crisis, with European investment declining by just 12% as opposed to 42% in North America, according to market researchers Cleantech Group and Deloitte. Last year's clean technology venture investments in Europe, North America, China and India totalled $5.6 billion in 557 deals, a preliminary report compiled by the companies shows. They expect the figures to increase by 5 to 10% once investors have announced all their activities from the past year, making 2009 a record year for the sector in terms of the number of deals struck… Read more

ENGAGE campaign showcased at Europe for Citizen’s Conference 2009

Charles Duff, Chief Operating Officer Europe & Middle East, Coffey International, represented ENGAGE at the Europe for Citizen’s Conference 2009 in Brussels in December. Ten green building trends for 2010

The Earth Advantage Institute has released a list of the top ten "green" building trends in 2010 that range from energy "scores" for homes to web-based displays that track energy usage in real time. The smart grid and connected home is expected to grow in 2010 as utilities continue to make upgrades to the grid for more effective generation, storage and distribution of power, and as smart-grid manufacturers develop custom and web-based display panels that show real-time home energy use, says the Earth Advantage Institute. Almost half of asset managers ignoring climate

An alarmingly high number of asset managers are ignoring the risks posed by climate change in their investment decision-making, according to a report by Ceres. About 44% of asset managers said they do not consider climate risks at all because they do not believe that the issue is material to their investment decision making, according to a survey by Boston-based Ceres, a coalition of investors and environmental groups. “I would argue this perspective is disappointing,” said Mindy Lubber, president of Ceres and director of the Investor Network on Climate Risk (INCR)… Read more

Korean companies expect to increase sustainability management practices

Sixty-five percent of 187 corporate respondents to a survey conducted by SolAbility, a provider of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) research for institutional investors, believe that the economic crisis has “highlighted the need for sustainable management thinking and management systems” in Korea. The survey, entitled Corporate Sustainability Survey 2009: Korea, also found that 55% of responding organizations have already implemented some form of sustainability activity into their operations… Read more
