Volunteering: The most cost effective way to train and develop your staff, a report by Corporate Citizenship
The City of London Corporation released recently a report which shows that corporate volunteering offers significant financial benefits for business. Produced by Corporate Citizenship, the report - ‘Volunteering: the Business Case' - tracks the learning and development of almost 550 employees from 16 major City firms volunteering in schools and colleges across the UK. The research shows that employee volunteers are able to develop a wide range of skills and competencies related to their personal effectiveness, including: communication skills, the ability to coach others, the adaptability and ability to be effective in different surroundings, and influencing and negotiating skills… Read more

The Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidad set up a commission on ICT and Sustainability
Nineteen members of the Club, specializing in a range of industries such as telecommunications, the construction sector, energy, hotel, and technology industries and employment, announced they are joining the Commission. It will explore a variety of activities in order to capitalize on ICT to enhance social, economic and environmental development so as to use above mentioned technologies in both public and private sectors. EABIS: Call for Papers – 17th Annual International Vincentian Business Ethics Conference

Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Labs, University of Melbourne and the Victoria State Government team up to open eco-oriented research center in Australia
Ben Verwaayen CEO of Alcatel-Lucent, Australia's Victorian State Treasurer John Lenders, and University of Melbourne Professor Rod Tucker today announced that Alcatel-Lucent's research arm, Bell Labs, the University of Melbourne and the Victorian State Government are partnering to establish a research center in Melbourne, Australia that will be devoted to innovation in energy efficient networks and technologies.The center will conduct research on a broad range of telecommunications network infrastructure elements and will focus on how those elements can be made more energy efficient… Read more

Opening of the Public Survey for the GRI Construction & Real Estate Sector Supplement (CRESS)
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) announced the opening of the Public Survey for the GRI Construction & Real Estate Sector Supplement (CRESS) and invites all stakeholders to submit their feedback via the online survey. On 26 May, the first day of the Amsterdam Global Conference on Sustainability and Transparency, the Public Survey for the Event Organizers Sector Supplement will also commence. AccountAbility & UNEP launch the Climate Competitiveness Index 2010 which sees countries forge ahead with low carbon growth strategies
The 2010 Climate Competitiveness Index, the most comprehensive study to date of national progress to create green jobs and economic growth through low carbon products and services, shows that in spite of uncertainty surrounding international climate negotiations, countries have forged ahead with low carbon growth strategies in the first quarter of 2010. The Climate Competitiveness Index, a collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) analyses 95 countries responsible for 97% of global economic activity and 96% of global carbon emissions. BITCI's Schools' Business Partnership has positive business impact
Ireland is one of the leading EU Member states in terms of its level of engagement between the education and business sectors at post primary level. Today, 120 companies are involved with 158 schools throughout the country. A recent study from the ESRI (April 2010) has shown that young people regret having left school early because they see their lack of qualifications as a barrier to employment or to further education and training. Study: Ethical Consumption by the Hamburg Trend Bureau
A new study by the Hamburg Trend Bureau shows: ethical consumption will also show above average growth in the future. In spite of the present economic crisis it has the potential of becoming one of tomorrow's key drivers. The topic sustainability has also become firmly established in industry. In the study the Trend Bureau interviewed 1,000 persons aged between 16 and 74 years. The results of expert interviews, an expert workshop and a lead-user discussion were also included in the study.
