French ADEME selects the France Nord Project involving Total on carbon dioxide transport
Championed by a consortium of French and European manufacturers and research organizations, the France Nord project, to transport and store carbon dioxide, has been selected by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The project will examine the feasibility of installing, in a sedimentary basin in the north central part of France, a carbon dioxide transportation and storage demonstration infrastructure to be potentially used by several CO2-emitting industries… Read more

BITC: Business, Government and charity worlds unite to tackle homelessness
John Varley, Group Chief Executive of Barclays and Chair of Business in the Community's (BITC's) Business Action on Homelessness (BAOH) campaign, brought together on May 18 senior business leaders, Government officials and voluntary sector professionals to challenge the stereotypes around homelessness and discuss how collaboratively they might contribute to a step change in the way that homeless services are delivered. EU action on water scarcity and drought: 2009 follow-up report adopted
The second follow-up report concluded that the priorities of the 2007 Communication on water scarcity and droughts remain valid in spite the fact that the year 2009 has brought a certain hydrological relief, and that much more effort is needed to stop and reverse the process of overexploitation of Europe's limited water resources. In 2010 the focus will be on water efficiency and in particular the potential for savings in the water use of buildings, leakage reduction and the launch of the preparatory activities for the 2012 water scarcity and droughts policy review… Read more

Green secrets to be shared with industry
An initiative to promote environmental thinking in global manufacturing was announced on May 20, through a move by two entrepreneurs to give away their commercial secrets to a new non-profit organisation in the US. Companies fail to engage consumers on environmental and social issues, study says
Eighty-four percent of Americans believe their ideas can help companies create products and services that are a win for consumers, business and society; yet, only half (53%) feel companies are effectively encouraging them to speak up on corporate social and environmental practices and products, according to the 2010 Cone Shared Responsibility Study, released today by Cone LLC. A majority of consumers want to be engaged on four key responsible business pillars, including how a company conducts its business (85%), its products and packaging (83%), its support of social and environmental issues (81%) and its marketing and advertising (74%)… Read more

Digital Agenda: Commission outlines action plan to boost Europe's prosperity and well-being
Implementing the ambitious Digital Agenda for Europe unveiled on May 19 by the European Commission would contribute significantly to the EU's economic growth and spread the benefits of the digital era to all sections of society. Half of European productivity growth over the past 15 years was already driven by information and communications technologies and this trend is likely to accelerate. The Agenda outlines seven priority areas for action: creating a digital Single Market, greater interoperability, boosting internet trust and security, much faster internet access, more investment in research and development, enhancing digital literacy skills and inclusion, and applying information and communications technologies to address challenges facing society like climate change and the ageing population… Read more

White House obesity plan mixes carrots with sticks
The White House is calling on food makers to curb marketing of unhealthy foods to children, part of a broad assault against childhood obesity. The recommendation is part of a 120-page report released on May 18 that outlines steps to fight the national epidemic. One in every three children ages 2-19 is overweight or obese, the report says. First Lady Michelle Obama has taken up childhood obesity as her signature cause. The report contends that companies' previous efforts to regulate marketing of sugary and fatty foods on their own have shown minimal results… Read more

French SRI assets jump by 70% in one year says Novethic report
SRI assets in France rose by 70% during 2009 to pass the €50bn mark, a rise of €20.8bn from the end of 2008 to the end of 2009, despite the fallout of the market crisis, according to the latest market survey by Novethic, the French sustainable investment research group. Within that overall rise, SRI retail asset growth was highest at 111% growth over the year to reach €15.6bn (€7.4 in 2008). Novethic said the retail rise reflected increasing sales of SRI funds by large bank and insurance groups as well as a development in product offering for France's employee savings plans… Read more

Norwegian central bank warns companies on child labour
Norges Bank, the Norwegian central bank which manages the NOK2.7trn (€354bn) assets of the Global Pension Fund, has issued a warning that it is expanding its expertise in child labour issues and that it will track companies for up to 20 years. Child labour is one of six focus areas for the fund, the others being water management, climate change, equal treatment of shareholders, board accountability and efficient markets.
