Self-employed workers to gain maternity and pension benefits under new EU law

Self-employed workers and their partners will enjoy better social protection - including the right to maternity leave for the first time - under new legislation endorsed by EU governments on June 7, 2010. The Directive on self-employed workers and assisting spouses repeals and replaces an earlier law and improves the social protection rights of millions of women in the labour market, boosting female entrepreneurship. At present, women represent only one in three entrepreneurs. The legislation, agreed with the European Parliament on 18 May and endorsed today by EU Member States, considerably improves the protection of female self-employed workers and assisting spouses in case of maternity or motherhood… Read more

Total to partner and build the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant

Masdar, Abu Dhabi's multi-faceted initiative advancing the development, commercialisation and deployment of renewable and alternative energy technologies and solutions, has appointed the bidding consortium of Total and Abengoa Solar to own, build and operate the world's largest concentrated solar power plant. Green Week 2010

This year, the largest annual conference on European environment policy turned the spotlight on biodiversity. Over some 30 sessions, the conference addressed the state of biodiversity and nature in Europe and the world, the benefits they bring, present-day pressures on them, and possible solutions to the current rates of loss. The path to be taken by EU policies on biodiversity and nature policies post-2010, the economic dimension of biodiversity, ecosystem services and Natura 2000 were also investigated. Commission rewards Europe's best green businesses during Green Week

Companies from the UK, Belgium, Germany and Spain have won the 2010 European Business Awards for the Environment. The awards are given in four categories and recognise European businesses that make a particular contribution to sustainable development by combining innovation, economic viability, environmental concern and social responsibility. The winners were announced by European Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik at an awards ceremony during the annual Green Week conference in Brussels. UK ethical investment hits record high of £9.5 billion

The £9.5 billion represents approximately three quarters of a million investors in ethical funds, up from around 200,000 investors in 1999 when around £2.4 billion was invested ethically in the UK. The last ten years has also seen the universe of UK ethical retail funds expand considerably. There are now almost 100 green and ethical funds available to UK investors - a decade ago there were just a couple of dozen. Growing consumer interest in ethical finance is backed up by the findings of EIRIS' recent Ipsos/MORI survey national consumer which found that 44% of the British public are interested in finding out about the ethical credentials of the next financial product or service that they buy… Read more
