New eco website to grow green business
An eco website to help people start environmentally-friendly businesses has been launched on August 13 in Ireland. The Low Carbon Entrepreneurs website is the brainchild of the Challenge Europe Project - a British Council climate change programme. The website provides information for entrepreneurs starting new businesses in the emerging green economy. Scottish scientists develop whisky biofuel
Using samples from the Glenkinchie Distillery in East Lothian, researchers at Edinburgh Napier University have developed a method of producing biofuel from two main by-products of the whisky distilling process - "pot ale", the liquid from the copper stills, and "draff", the spent grains. Copious quantities of both waste products are produced by the £4bn whisky industry each year, and the scientists say there is real potential for the biofuel, to be available at local garage forecourts alongside traditional fuels… Read more

European Commission’s development of a European multilingual classification of jobs and skills
The European Commission is developing a European Skills, Competences and Occupations taxonomy (ESCO), which will describe the most relevant skills, competences and qualifications needed for several thousand occupations. ESCO will be made available to all institutions and stakeholders in the labour market and within the education sector for use in their respective systems. Toyota GB launches 8-step environmental plan
Following a one-year pilot study, Toyota Great Britain (TGB) has rolled-out its 8-Step Environmental Plan to their network of more than 200 retailers. The Environmental Plan aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions at all Toyota retailers in the United Kingdom. The plan has been introduced with the support of the Carbon Trust, an independent non-profit company that was established by the UK government to accelerate the country’s move to a low-carbon economy. Celebrities test driving skills in eco-challenge at Toyota Motor Poland
Toyota Motor Poland, in conjunction with the Toyota Driving Academy, held their second Celebrity Eco Driving Challenge on 23 July 2010. Ten local celebrities competed to see who could achieve the lowest fuel consumption. The Challenge was divided into three stages. The first stage enabled the celebrities to familiarise themselves with the Prius vehicle while receiving eco-driving training en route. New ways to increase food production needed by 2050, a report by the Royal Society says
Artificial meat grown in vats may be needed if the 9 billion people expected to be alive in 2050 are to be adequately fed without destroying the earth, some of the world's leading scientists report on August 16. In a set of 21 papers published by the Royal Society, the scientists from many disciplines and countries say that little more land is available for food production, but add that the challenge of increasing global food supplies by as much as 70% in the next 40 years is not insurmountable. Trade unions focus on forced labor as an issue for sustainable investors, CWC briefing paper suggests
As a new briefing paper, entitled "Investing in Decent Work" by the Global Unions Committee on Workers' Capital (CWC) points out, there have been instances of aggressive engagement by sustainable investors in issues relating to forced labor. Addressing forced child labor in Uzbekistan, for instance, a coalition of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) formed the Responsible Cotton Network, a group that encourages socially responsible sourcing of cotton, in 2008. The Network, which includes Calvert and Boston Common Asset Management, has successfully pressured many clothing companies to exclude Uzbek cotton in their supply chains… Read more

UK's first geothermal plant given go-ahead
Renewable energy from the depths of the earth could be produced in Cornwall after planning permission was granted for the UK's first commercial deep geothermal power plant. Geothermal Engineering, the company behind the project, plans to drill 4.5km into the ground to access rocks at temperatures of about 200°C. Geothermal Engineering said the plant was due to be operational by 2013 and would provide heat for the local area and enough electricity, which would be fed into the national grid, to power 20,000 homes… Read more
