CR Academy, led by BITC, launches framework to support professional development of CR practitioners
The CR Academy, a collaborative project led by Business in the Community (BITC) to provide training, support and advice to corporate responsibility (CR) professionals, has this month launched The CR Practitioner Competency Map to support the professional development of employees in Corporate Responsibility.This new resource is publicly available to organisations of all sizes and in all fields, and is free to use. It will help: CR practitioners, either full time or for whom CR forms only a part of their full time role, to identify development needs and construct a personal development plan to help them continually improve their effectiveness and equip themselves for future roles… Read more

Forética hosts Spanish MarketPlace on CSR - First prize to Grupo Norte
On September 20th, Forética hosted the third Spanish MarketPlace on CSR at the Railway Museum in Madrid under the theme "Destination CSR". Around 400 participants attended the event and voted for their favourite CSR initiatives presented by leading companies in the MarketPlace exhibition. The winner, Grupo Norte, received an award for their initiative aimed at supporting labour market integration for victims of gender-based violence. Provident Polska and Warsaw Volunteer Centre announce results of "Yes! I help" journalist competition
On 10 September 2010, Provident Polska, part of International Personal Finance, and the Volunteer Centre in Warsaw announced the winners of the "Yes! I help" journalist competition. The idea behind the competition is to award those journalists that popularize volunteer work in Poland. Until 15 July, journalists could submit materials published between May 2009 and May 2010 in three categories: press and the internet, radio and television. SustainAbility releases phase 2 of "Rate the Raters" research initiative
SustainAbility has released phase two in the four-part research initiative Rate the Raters, based on an inventory of over 100 sustainability ratings and their attributes, and a survey of over 1000 sustainability professionals on their perceptions of ratings.The analysis identified a number of key findings. For example, of the 108 ratings in the inventory, only 21 existed in 2000, which suggests that, of the ratings most prominent today, the vast majority have emerged within the last ten years… Read more

Top 3,000 public companies responsible for $2.15 trillion worth of environmental damage in 2008 - UN report
Global environmental damage caused by human activity in 2008 represented a monetary value of $ 6.6 trillion, equivalent to 11% of global GDP, calculates a study released today by the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and UNEP Finance Initiative. Those global costs are 20% larger than the $ 5.4 trillion decline in the value of pension funds in developed countries caused by the global financial crisis in 2007/8. The study, an initial effort to quantify in monetary terms the environmental harm caused by business and the possible future consequences for investor portfolios and company earnings, estimates that in 2008 the World's top 3,000 public companies were responsible for a third of all global environmental damage… Read more

Call for best practices on global corporate volunteering - CODESPA
CODESPA, a Spanish international development foundation, and ICEP (Austria) are launching a public call for best practices of innovative and high impact Global Corporate Volunteering programmes. Large, Medium and Small Enterprises that engage in Global Corporate Volunteering are encouraged to submit their proposals by October 18th, 2010.In cooperation with the IESE Business School, the most innovative examples will be included in a casebook that will be widely distributed worldwide among companies, academia, students and NGOs. Cargill reports on global corporate responsibility actions
Cargill has released its 2010 Corporate Responsibility Report, highlighting the company's efforts in food safety, responsible supply chains, environmental innovation, rural development, workplace safety and community engagement. The report, entitled "Growing Together," is also available in an online version at www.cargill.com/corporate-responsibility-report-2010. European Commission publishes guidelines to reconcile mining and biodiversity policy
The European Commission has published new guidelines to clarify rules for extractive industries in protected natural areas. As demand for precious raw materials grows, access to land available for mineral extraction in the EU is becoming ever more important. Some minerals are found on land within Natura 2000, the EU's network of protected natural areas, and the new guidelines explain the procedures to be followed in such cases. The economic implications are high. The industry in question has a turnover of around €49 billion and provides employment for more than a quarter of a million citizens… Read more

Accounting for Sustainability survey calls for institutional investor input
The Prince of Wales’s Accounting for Sustainability Project (A4S) is seeking responses from institutional investors for its online consultation into integrated reporting, Responsible Investor reports. The project is looking into how current corporate reporting shows the relationship between financial data and environmental, social and governance (ESG) information. Employers not ready for ageing workforce, UK study says
According to research by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), only 14% of managers in the United Kingdom consider their organisation well-prepared to cope with an aging workforce, despite the impending abolition of the Default Retirement Age (DRA) and the fact that a third of UK workers will be aged over 50 by 2020. In their report "Managing an Ageing Workforce," CMI and CIPD report that 34% claim board-level recognition of ageing workforce issues is non-existent, despite the fact that 93% see value in retaining the knowledge and experience of older workers… Read more
