Energy savings boost competitiveness of ABB plant in Italy
ABB’s plastic processing plant factory in the province of Vicenza in Italy has used the company's own motor-control technology to reduce its environmental impact and save costs. The measures taken have cut the factory's electricity bill by $80,000 per year and achieved energy savings of 442,000 kilowatt-hours per year, equivalent to the power used by 116 average households in the European Union.A number of indirect savings were also achieved, such as a reduction in service costs, in the power required for cooling press oil, and in the power needed to start the machines… Read more

PwC releases 'man on the street' video clip on sustainability
PricewaterhouseCoopers' Retail and Consumer practice and the Grocery Manufacturers Association have released a four minute video clip featuring man-on-the-street interviews to gauge consumer sentiment on green power, green products and processes and perceptions on sustainable companies. Nestlé and UNDP partner to train women agricultural advisers in Pakistan
A joint programme between the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and Nestlé Pakistan has trained 4000 women agricultural advisers, whose assistance and advice is helping to increase milk production among female dairy farmers in rural Pakistan. The field staff provide farmers with technical assistance and advice about animal health, breeding and fodder production. This has helped raise the quality and value of the milk produced which in turn increases the health and economy of the local community… Read more

SAM, the sustainability investment specialist, and Dow Jones Indexes, a leading global index provider, have added four additional blue-chip indexes to the family of Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). BASF works with MENTOR Initiative and Red Cross to get 100,000 malaria nets to cyclone victims in Myanmar
BASF donated 100,000 INTERCEPTOR® malaria nets to the relief efforts following cyclone Nagris in Myanmar. The company channeled 75,000 nets through the well-known U.K. based emergency response agency “The MENTOR Initiative” and another 25,000 nets through the Thailand Red Cross. Since cyclone Nargis hit the country past May, there has been an increase in malaria and dengue fever. Big companies can make it harder for employees to help go green: survey
Big U.K. firms should give employees more of a say in greening their workplaces, and U.S. companies need to live up to their eco-friendly business practices internally as well as externally, GreenBiz reports on the findings from two worker attitude surveys.According to 1,200 U.K. workers surveyed by power and gas giant E.ON, jobholders at small to medium-sized firms are significantly more likely to help curb energy use and carbon emissions by turning off lights and computers and recycling than employees at larger companies, who say bureaucracy hampers their efforts… Read more

Nissan launches eco-pedal to help reduce fuel consumption
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.,has unveiled the ECO Pedal – a world first technology – designed to assist drivers to become more fuel-efficient. When the eco-pedal system is on, each time the driver steps on the accelarator, a counter push-back control mechanism is activated if the system detects excess pressure, helping to inform the driver that they could be using more fuel than required. An eco-driving indicator integrated into the instrument panel feeds the driver with real-time fuel consumption levels to help improve his/her driving behavior… Read more
